Our first US visitors in France

From 6/23 - 6/30, my sister Annie, her husband Mike, and my 6-year-old niece Madison visited us. They had just spent a week in Paris, then came to us on the TGV (high-speed train).

We had a lot of fun hanging out and visiting lots of places: Cannes, Monaco, the beach. We also rented a car and drove up into the mountains one day for a lovely picnic. We hadn't seen each other in 14+ months, so it was great to reconnect.

One day, Annie and Mike took the train to Nice by themselves so they could have a day out on their own. So Kev and I took Madison to a playground near old Antibes so she could have a run-around. She ended up playing football (soccer) with some very friendly little boys and had a great time. On the way home, we let her splash around in the fountain in the main square in Antibes. She was soaking wet and had a grin a mile wide. Her little wet sneakers left footprints all the way back to the apartment.

The unfortunate part of the story is that a few days before they arrived, it got hot. Not like, oh-nice-break-out-the-shorts hot. Hot as in oh-my-god-I-think-I'm-going-to-melt HOT. Normally, May and June gradually build up to the heat of the summer. But since May was crappy and rainy, and early June was pretty cool, the real heat just came on all of a sudden.

So instead of Chez O'Driscoll, it became O'Driscoll's Sauna and Steam Bath.

It took us all by surprise, and Kev and I hadn't had time yet to learn the best way to cool the apartment. Thank goodness we had bought some fans, which we all took turns standing in front of. And we were down in the little market in our building each day buying loads of beer, rose wine, and white wine...you know...to help us stay cooler. We spent quite a bit of time in front of the fans playing various card games, sipping our drinks.

It was a really good time and we're so glad they had the chance to visit us.

Of course, 2 days after they left, the weather cooled down.
