Last night, we packed up a bag with some green salad, cheese, baguette, wine, and cookies, and walked down to the water near Fort Carre. Our original plan was to sit on the pebble beach there, but Kev decided that he wanted to look out over the sea from one of the benches that are dotted along the walkway that surrounds the fort.
The fort is surrounded by water on 3 sides, and on one of those sides is the main Antibes marina, Port Vauban. The opposite side from the port is the pebble beach. We sat somewhere roughly in the middle between these two points, where we had a 270 degree view of the area.
Our bench overlooked some tidal pools, as well as the entrance to the marina. We watched the sail and motor boats come back in as dusk fell and the sky turned from blue to pink to purple. The water was calm and clear, only a slight shade darker than the lovely turquoise blue it normally is. We saw boats of all sizes, from a tiny fishing boat to a large yacht. A lone swimmer took advantage of the calm waters near the beach. A cool, light breeze stirred every now and again.
It was a hazy evening, and off in the distance, we could see a cruise ship that had left the port of Nice and sailed out along the horizon. It seemed almost like a ghost ship, as we could only see the main outline of its bulk, and it took quite a long time to go from one side of our view to the other.
We drank our wine out of a silver tankard that Kev had received as a birthday gift last year, our only non-glass drinking vessel, and listened to some men nearby speaking Arabic in quiet voices.
Lovely.
