Guy Fawkes/Bonfire Night

They have a really cool holiday over here known as Bonfire Night. If you saw V for Vendetta, you may be somewhat aware of it, something like "always remember the 5th of November". Anyway Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament on November 5, 1605, but it being soggy England, the gunpowder would not light and he was caught.

Anyway, they have Bonfire Night. Bonfires with effigies of Guy Fawkes and fireworks. Not the crappy Safe and Sane ones we have in Cali, but Roman Candles and rockets. It is most excellent, much better than Halloween and it doesn't rot your teeth.

Of course there are those who do not allow bonfires (like anything would catch fire in this damp and dreary land) and have them put on by the local authorities, but of course they are not as fun because you have to stand back and you cannot throw the spent fireworks (or anything else) on the fire. But, those are never fun. I like to put pumpkins in the ashes of the old couch that was burned and to rake the coals to make sure the lawn has burned completely, like some sort of UFO took off from there.

Anyway, there were three effigies, one of special artistic note by a papier-mache prodigy that I am related to. We had homemade soup, a very good fireworks display, and several rousing games of Twister.
