Kari and I went out today to have our first true beach day on the French Riviera. We took the bus to Biot, about 10 minutes east of Antibes. We brought the beach umbrella, The Sunday Times (London Times Sunday edition), and the sunblock.
Once we got there, we took a quick dip and then sunblocked up and read the paper for about an hour. There were still people swimming, but some people seemed to be indicating that there were jellyfish present. The lifeguard came down to the water, but did not seem overly concerned.
So I go back in for a swim. I am in for about 10 minutes, swimming around and OW! $%#@ @#&* $%#@ I got bit! I saw the jellyfish out of the corner of my eye. I swam back to shore and rinsed it (on the elbow - oh yeah, peeing on it does not work, and gets you a 100E fine - you don't want to know) with seawater. Then I went to the lifeguard station and they put some cream on it (probably an antihistimine cream of some sort - hey Kari, have I always had this third nipple?).
Yeah, so that put a damper on the day. It still stings a bit (like getting jabbed with needles), but not so bad; probably after my third beer, it won't hurt at all. It left a welt, like what we would get having rubber band fights as kids (Stephen and Eamon should remember those).
Oh well, I guess we will only be swimming at the pool for the rest of the summer. The water was cool also, not necessarily warm. For more on our story, see the link for "Stinging Tentacles...".
