England does not have apprenticeships like we have, in fact their unions do not have hiring halls either. Apparently, The City&Guilds set the standards of the trade, and then the college or training school set up the curriculm. The workers find their own jobs and they can join the union if they want.
In order for me to work I have to be 16th Edition (their NEC) approved. I found a 2-day course at a local college, and there is a test on the third day. The cost will be about £200 pounds and it will not start until 5/2 or 5/9.
I visited a residential job site the other day, about 23 homes. The job site conditions were FAR superior to anything I have ever seen in 617. The general has to, by law, provide a canteen with hot water for their lunch and tea breaks. It is just a connex, finished on the inside, done up with seats, lights and power and plumbing. The general has to provide at least one urinal and one stall for the first thirty guys and then they have to add 1 and 1 for each additional five. These ARE NOT portables, but rather a connex done up on the inside like a restroom and tied into the plumbing and the sewer. HOT running water, actual toilets with stalls and urinals - a real restroom. The sinks are large enough for you to wash up to your elbow, soap and towels.

Leave it to an O'Driscoll to be most impressed by toilets, rather than the foreign land that they have just moved to!!!!
Hope all continues to go well, keep posting!
